Lord Justice Stephen Males was called to the Bar in 1978 and took silk in 1998. He practised for over 30 years at the commercial bar as an advocate and (latterly) as an arbitrator. During that time he specialised as a shipping lawyer and appeared in many reported cases. He was an Assistant Recorder and Recorder of the Crown Court and a Deputy High Court Judge sitting in the Administrative Court and Commercial Court. He is a Bencher of the Middle Temple. He was appointed to the High Court (Queen’s Bench Division, now King’s Bench Division) in 2012 and sat often in the Commercial Court. He was a Presiding Judge of the North Eastern Circuit from 2015 to 2018 and was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in January 2019. He is also the President of Clergy Discipline Tribunals for the Church of England.
