Transformed from in-person to online
Responding to the educational need for “maritime management”, WMU teamed up with DNV to develop an e-learning “Executive Maritime Management” (EMM) postgraduate diploma programme.
Built on existing subject materials available at WMU and DNV, the course includes content from a conventional, in -person programme that was developed into online exercises to reach a larger audience. Classroom instructors narrated their presentations, and features like animation, interactive menus, and review functions were introduced to enhance the user experience. Quizzes were developed for each 30-minute e-lesson to gauge participant understanding. As a programme carrying academic credit, EMM has formal assessment components consisting of group work and individual essay writing. EMM is one of the most popular online offerings provided by WMU.
Modified and enhanced programme
The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) OPRC Introduction course is a major capacity-building effort focused on the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation (OPRC) related to the appropriate handling of oil spills by ships. WMU E-learning Solutions worked closely with the IMO to upgrade the existing course with an enhanced training package which can be completed online independently.
The course comprises six modules, each with quizzes and a final, integrated and fully animated exercise. E-lessons may be repeated as many times as needed until all of the correct answers in the exercise are achieved. The OPRC course was an immediate success upon launch with more than 800 people from over 90 countries registering within the first month of it being available. Due to WMU E-Learning Solutions, the OPRC introductory level e-learning course allows the IMO to train more people, more effectively, within a shorter timeframe and at a lower cost.
Newly developed
In 2018, WMU and the ITF Seafarers’ Trust launched a new seafarer welfare training programme designed to equip maritime professionals with key skills and knowledge to support the welfare of seafarers.
The e-learning course features more than 30 experts making e-learning an ideal modality for the delivery to capture the knowledge of the experts and make it available worldwide. All instructors were guided in preparing their presentations to ensure integrity and consistency throughout the programme. The e-lessons include features such as animation, interactive menus, and quizzes to facilitate effective, self-paced learning. Participants from around the world have benefited from the MARI-WEL programme which is the first of its kind to deliver a comprehensive overview of the topics and issues that relate to seafarer welfare.
Modified programme for blended delivery
In cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), WMU E-Learning Solutions developed the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS) auditor’s course into an e-learning programme.
The course can be delivered in a full e-learning format, or in a blended-learning format that includes in-person as well as online self-learning modes. The training of auditors, like many other training situations, benefits from a hybrid delivery due to the need for some personal interaction including guided debates and discussions on complex matters. Where knowledge and skills can be acquired on an individual basis, the IMSAS programme consists of interactive exercises, role-play, real-life scenarios, problem-solution simulations, and specially designed questions and answers. The blended delivery model allows the participants to better prepare for the lectures, and repeat difficult/unfamiliar content to ensure the grasp of the key concepts. Delivery of the course has been exceptionally well received.
