Ayo Pacheco joined the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute in November 2024 as a Project and Research Support Fellow.  Ayo supports the Institute with research and project management efforts for the Ocean Research Agenda. He assists the Programme PI’s with research matters as well as supports the Institute’s outreach, communications and capacity building activities in the realm of the Ocean Research Agenda.

Prior to joining WMU, Ayo has served in the navy for nearly two decades, where he honed his skills in maritime operations, staff writing, and management.  He brings extensive experience in international stakeholder engagement and a deep understanding of maritime security and safety.

Ayo holds a Master's degree in Maritime Affairs, specializing in Maritime Energy Management, from the World Maritime University, where he focused on the circular economy and New (SMART) Blue Economy initiatives. He also holds a certification in Maritime Safety and Security (MSSC) from the Regional Maritime University Accra Ghana. 

Ayo is passionate about the emerging concept of the New Blue Economy and its integration into international efforts in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ). He is currently working towards contributing to existing WMU projects to develop frameworks for deploying and regulating marine technologies in conservation efforts for Marine Protected Areas in ABNJ.
