Augustina Schick has joined the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute as a Carlo Schmid-Program Fellow for 2026/2027. As part of the WMU-GOI Future Ocean Programme, she provides research and project support to the team and Associate Professor Aleke Stöfen-O’Brien, focusing on non-State actors and rights-based approaches to ocean protection. Specifically, she will conduct research on the capacity-building of ocean cities and the implementation of Nature’s Rights approaches.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Global Responsibility and Leadership from University College Fryslân in the Netherlands and a Master's Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the United Nations Research Institute. She is also in the final stages of pursuing a second Masters Degree in Political Science, with a focus on international law, at the University of Hamburg.
Prior to joining the WMU-GOI, Augustina worked as a research and project assistant for the World Future Council, where she evaluated outstanding laws and policies on ecosystem protection, biodiversity, and Rights for Nature initiatives worldwide. In her subsequent role at Corsus-corporate sustainability, she supported research and the delivery of biodiversity workshops, as well as the facilitation of the International Cities Forum 2026 in Kiel, focusing on science as a driving force for innovative urban societies.
Augustina’s close affiliation with a small island in the Wadden Sea has shaped her long-standing interest in human-ocean interdependence and ocean governance, which continues to guide her academic and professional path.
