WMU–UPF Workshop on Maritime Affairs & Ocean Governance

On 21 April, the World Maritime University-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI) welcomed members of Lund University’s Association of Foreign Affairs (UPF) under the framework of the Future Ocean Programme, for a joint Workshop on the theme of “Research, Academia and Practice in Dialogue: Advancing Maritime Affairs & ocean governance through student voices”.

Delivered as a full day, hybrid event, the workshop provided an interdisciplinary forum for discussion on current issues in maritime and ocean governance. Onsite participants included UPF Lund student members and members of the WMU-GOI, alongside an international audience joining online.

Dr Tafsir Matin Johansson delivered welcome remarks on behalf of WMU. An overview of the third pillar of the Nippon Foundation-funded Future Oceans Programme followed, with a focus on ocean observation technologies and the evolving legal and institutional frameworks shaping ocean stewardship. WMU presentations were delivered by Associate Professor Matin Johansson, Assistant Professor Aspasia Pastra, and PhD candidates Suriya N. Sundararajan and Ayo Pacheco. The presentations addressed the governance of emerging ocean observation technologies, including their increasing autonomy, associated risks, and regulatory gaps in areas beyond national jurisdiction. They also explored the need for interoperable ocean biodiversity data and effective governance of marine genetic resources, emphasizing standardization, capacity development, and international collaboration.

In the afternoon, UPF student members presented interdisciplinary research findings across a broad range of topics, including law, trade, sustainability, and geopolitics, with perspectives covering several regions of the world.

Overall, the presentations sparked interactive discussions and engaging dialogue with the international audience, while also encouraging plans for future collaboration among the onsite participants.
