On 7 November, the World Maritime University (WMU) was awarded the CAREER4SEA–EUROPORT Educational Award in recognition of its outstanding global impact on maritime education, policy and research. The award highlights WMU’s leadership in empowering future maritime professionals through advanced postgraduate programmes and international capacity-building initiatives.

The award was presented during the CAREER4SEA EUROPORT Awards ceremony in the margins of EUROPORT held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. WMU was recognized for its role in shaping future maritime leaders and expanding global cooperation in the maritime sector.

Accepting the award on behalf of WMU, Professor Dimitrios Dalaklis, Head of the Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration Specialization, emphasized the University’s impact saying, “The WMU experience is transformative, broadening personal and professional perspectives, and inspiring our graduates to be agents of positive change. Our alumni network spans 171 nations. This extraordinary diversity strengthens international cooperation and reinforces our mission to build global capacity and promote sustainable development.”

Founded in 1983 within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), WMU serves as the organization’s global centre of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research, and capacity development. The University provides a unique learning environment that brings together maritime professionals from around the world. This year’s Class of 2026 marks a milestone for the University, achieving full gender parity for the first time—highlighting progress toward greater inclusivity in the maritime sector.

WMU’s programmes have grown beyond the flagship Master of Science in Maritime Affairs in Malmö to offer MSc specializations in China, a robust PhD programme, and a range of distance learning and professional development courses. Alumni go on to lead policy development, innovation, safety, and sustainability efforts at local, national, and international levels.

The CAREER4SEA–EUROPORT Educational Award recognizes WMU’s enduring commitment to enhancing global maritime capacity and advancing sustainable development across the sector. The University accepted the award on behalf of the entire WMU global family—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners—united by a shared belief in education as a powerful force for progress, peace, and prosperity.
