WMU Hosts International Workshop on Climate Advisory Opinions

The World Maritime University (WMU) hosted the second day of the international workshop Ius Maris Climaticum: Directions in Maritime Law and Policy After the Climate Advisory Opinions on 9 June at its Malmö campus, in collaboration with Lund University.

Bringing together leading experts in maritime and climate law, the workshop explored the implications of recent climate advisory opinions for maritime law, ocean governance, and global climate action. Sessions were integrated into WMU’s Maritime Law and Policy (MLP) Master’s programme, giving students direct exposure to discussions among prominent legal scholars and practitioners.

Distinguished participants included H.E. Tomas Heidar, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), ITLOS Judge Dr. Konrad Marciniak, and Professor Yoshifumi Tanaka of the University of Copenhagen.

Key discussions focused on the growing role of courts and tribunals in shaping climate obligations, the legal significance of recent advisory opinions, and their relevance to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Participants also examined the roles of international and regional organizations, including the International Maritime Organization, the United Nations Environment Programme, the European Union, and the African Union.

The workshop highlighted equity concerns surrounding the global North-South divide, emphasizing the challenges faced by developing countries and Small Island Developing States in meeting climate-related maritime obligations.

Supported by the Rune and Lena Lavin Foundation for Legal Research and the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, the event reflects WMU’s ongoing commitment to advancing research and education at the intersection of maritime law, climate change, and ocean governance.
