WMU Hosts Second Annual POTENT-X Conference

The second annual POTENT-X conference was held on 6 May at the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö on the morning prior to the “Decarbonizing Together” Global MTCC Network Workshop on Inclusive Maritime Decarbonization.

The Ports as Energy Transition Hubs (POTENT-X) project aims to transform European maritime ports into energy hubs by establishing Living Labs Networks across Europe. These networks enable collaboration between stakeholders and real-life testing of clean energy innovations. POTENT-X focuses on renewable energy technologies, port governance, and business models. The initiative enhances energy systems, digitalization, and infrastructure, aiming for sustainable port operations and successful energy transitions.

The POTENT-X conference highlighted the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, ports, and international organizations in supporting maritime decarbonization and sustainable port energy transitions. The conference brought together experts from leading institutions, universities, ports, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to discuss policy, digitalization, financing, stakeholder engagement, and practical implementation strategies for transforming ports into energy transition hubs.

An important aspect of the event was the active involvement of WMU Maritime Energy Management students, as well as PhD students and researchers, who contributed to knowledge exchange and academic engagement throughout the discussions. The event promoted interaction between students, researchers, industry professionals, and international organizations, strengthening institutional collaboration and supporting long term capacity development in maritime energy management and decarbonization.
