Transport Canada and WMU strengthen partnership in support of Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan

In London on 29 November, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University (WMU), and Mr. Donald Roussel, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security, Transport Canada (TC), signed two Memoranda of Understanding setting out the framework under which WMU will undertake two comparative studies:

1. An examination of best practices in the regulation of (salmonid) aquaculture service support vessels within the European Union (EU) and other significant salmon-producing states; and

2. An examination of how the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code has been implemented within the EU and certain other states. Both studies are in support of initiatives under Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan (OPP).

These two studies follow an earlier announced (27 October 2017) comparative study of marine medical certificate issuance that supports TC’s review of related regulations and policy framework under the OPP.

“I am delighted that WMU is able to continue to provide support to Transport Canada, thereby strengthening our collaborative relationship. These two important research themes will make a significant contribution to the implementation of Canada’s OPP,” stated President Doumbia-Henry.

“The research by the World Maritime University, which is under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization, will benefit Transport Canada’s work to enhance marine safety under the Oceans Protection Plan,” added Mr. Roussel.
