Propeller Donated by Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd.

On 5 June, Mr. Motoyoshi Nakashima, President, Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd., was at WMU for a ceremonial inauguration of the propeller that his company donated to WMU and the City of Malmö. The ceremonial ribbon cutting was done by Mr. Nakashima and Kent Andersson, Chairman, Malmö City Council.

The propeller was officially inaugurated at the opening of new WMU building on 19 May with a ribbon cutting ceremony that included Mr. Hideaki Nakashima and Mr. Ralph Nicolaisen as representatives of the Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd., Mr. Koji Sekimizu, IMO Secretary-General, and Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, WMU President Designate.

The 11-tonne propeller was donated to WMU in October of 2012 and arrived at the Malmö Port on 10 January 2013 where it was stored in a warehouse until the new WMU facilities were completed. The bronze propeller is now installed across the canal from WMU. It was originally designed for a 33,300 DWT Bulk Carrier and has 4 blades x 5,250mm diameter x 3,607 mm. It serves as a new focal point that highlights the maritime presence of WMU in the city center.
