Outstanding Alumnus Awardee Lectures at WMU

On 31 October, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Dwight C. Gardiner, from Antigua and Barbuda made a presentation to students and faculty on "Climate Change - the Perspective of a Small Island State’s Maritime Administration."

Ambassador Gardiner is a graduate of WMU (M.Sc. MSA(N) 1990) and will receive the prestigious WMU award for Outstanding Alumnus at the Class of 2014 graduation ceremony on Sunday, 2 November. In regard to his time at WMU he stated, “ The foremost significant and lasting impression which made an impact on me during my tenure at the World Maritime University were the lifelong network of learning and relationships established that contributed to the growth, successes and achievements in my career.”

Currently, Ambassador Gardiner serves as the Director and Registrar General of the Antigua and Barbuda Department of Marine Services and Merchant Shipping (ADOMS). For over thirty years, he has served in a wide range of capacities in the regional and international maritime industry. He has been credited with the expansion of the Antigua and Barbuda Maritime Administration and the simultaneous growth of the shipping registry, positioning it to be one of the leading ship registries in the world.

Ambassador Gardiner’s service to the maritime sector via numerous regional and international committees and sub-committees has ensured that Antigua and Barbuda is represented at the global decision-making table regarding international maritime policy, and his efforts have been recognized through several accolades and international awards.
