A Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Cooperation was signed between WMU and the International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (IFLOS) on 27 July 2014.

The signing ceremony was held at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)’s headquarters in Hamburg, Germany,  in the presence of Professor Dr. Doris König, Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Foundation for the Law of the Sea and Judge at the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, Judge Shunji Yanai, President of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea, Dr. Thomas Mensah, Former President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, as well as WMU’s Visiting Professor and holding a Honorary Doctorate from WMU (2007), as well as Professor Neil Bellefontaine, Acting President of the World Maritime University and Dr. María Carolina Romero Lares, WMU Associate Professor and IFLOS Alumnus.

Under the terms of the three-year agreement, linkages will be established between the two organizations with a view to supporting capacity building in the field of Maritime Law, with particular emphasis on less developed countries, whilst also increasing general awareness of the work of the ITLOS.

The thus envisaged cooperation will develop both at the academic and research level.
