Michael Grey and Roberto Giorgi, Guest Lecturers

As part of the Contemporary Maritime Issues Seminar, on 9 September, WMU welcomed Michael Grey, columnist and former Editor of Lloyd’s List and Fairplay, and Roberto Giorgi, Honorary President and former CEO of V. Ships Ltd. Both former seafarers, they focused on four main topics: 1) Focus on the Human Element – the forgotten component, 2) Conditions and Life at Sea – why is this important? 3) Making Shipping Safer – much more than regulations and 4) Challenges for the Future – looking a generation ahead. A key point of the presentation was that there are no feasible alternatives to shipping, therefore it is an essential industry that will continue to grow meaning a bright future for bright people in the industry. The lecture was open to all students in the M.Sc. program.
