International Women’s Day 2026 - Rights. Justice. Action.

March 8 is annually recognized as International Women's Day (IWD). The 2026 theme - “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” - calls on the world to demand equal rights for women and girls – and equal justice to enforce, exercise, and enjoy those rights. It is a call to action to dismantle structural barriers such as discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, and harmful practices and social norms that continue to undermine the rights of women and girls.

Professor Max Mejia, WMU President, said, “On International Women’s Day 2026, we join the global call for equal rights for all women and girls —and for equal justice to make those rights a reality. We must work together to break down the barriers in law, opportunity, and safety. Progress demands action. At the World Maritime University, we are committed to advancing inclusive education and opening pathways to leadership across the maritime sector. We will continue working to ensure that all women and girls have the equal opportunity to thrive.”

Through its education, capacity development, and research agenda, WMU remains committed to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, particularly Goal 5, focused on Gender Equality. Recognizing that all Sustainable Development Goals are interrelated and indivisible, the University continues to integrate gender equality across its programmes and initiatives.

The Malmö MSc Class of 2026 marks a significant milestone, with women representing 51% of the cohort. The Malmö MSc Class of 2025 maintained 40% female enrollment, while MSc specializations in China have achieved gender parity in recent years. WMU continues its efforts to reach sustainable gender balance across all programmes.

WMU actively conducts and advances research on gender-related issues in the maritime and ocean sectors. This includes initiatives such as the Empowering Women for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development Programme, which has been recognized as an Ocean Decade Action by IOC-UNESCO.

WMUWA Seminar

In honour of IWD, the WMU Women’s Association (WMUWA) will host their annual student seminar on 18 March. The objectives of the WMUWA are to connect, educate and inspire women in the maritime industry and to promote the interests of female maritime professionals through the creation of an international network for women from the WMU and women involved in other internationally recognized female associations in the maritime sector.
