International Day

International Day has become a tradition at WMU, much anticipated by students, staff, host families and other friends of the University.

This year International Day was held on Saturday 23 July. Hopes for sunny weather were dashed by torrential rain early in the morning, but by the appointed hour of 14:00, all was ready in the huge tent erected in the courtyard of the Henrik Smith Residence: food from every corner of the globe, colourful costumes, high spirits. Vice-President (Academic) Neil Bellefontaine gave an opening speech and President of the Student Council, Saeed Yusuf, welcomed the students’ guests and invited them to share some hours of fellowship with true international flavour.

Hosts Giriraj Rathod and Nyein Ei Phyu took their guests twice around the globe on an imaginary space voyage, commentating first on the procession of national costumes and then on the cultural performances. Meanwhile, the guests were served wonderful food from every region represented at WMU.

Music, laughter, colour and fun: all the work in arranging the day paid off handsomely. As Mr Yusuf later observed: “if the vision of the initiators of this event is cultural education for peaceful and harmonious coexistence in an international environment like ours, then I can confirm that it is really serving its purpose”.

Special thanks to International Day Coordinator Jo Ann Salamanca, the Student Council and all the organizing team.
