IMO Director of Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division Delivers Special Lecture

On 31 October, Dr Jose Matheickal, Director, Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division for the International Maritime Organization (IMO), delivered a special lecture on “Navigating Your Future: Unlocking Global Maritime Opportunities Post-WMU," to the Class of 2024 graduands of the Malmö MSc in Maritime Affairs.

Dr Matheickal congratulated the soon-to-be graduates as they step into a world of maritime excellence where the opportunities are boundless. His presentation highlighted various post-WMU opportunities tailored to the unique expertise of WMU graduates, including consultancy roles within the IMO and how to navigate the competitive waters of UN maritime-related jobs. He also emphasized the strength of being part of a maritime experts network, a powerful strategic context that can open doors for professional growth, collaboration, and mentorship.

The insight he imparted included how to leverage the WMU experience for involvement in IMO's Technical Cooperation (TC) projects within the students’ home countries and beyond, providing examples of alumni success stories. In addition, he spoke about how to align a professional journey with the evolving needs of the maritime industry. A lively question and answer session followed the presentation.

As the Director of IMO’s Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division (TCID), Dr Matheickal is responsible for four sub-divisions dealing with the IMO member state audit and implementation, planning and programming of the IMO's technical cooperation efforts, maritime development in developing regions through capacity development and resource mobilization and partnership building to support the technical assistance function of IMO. Since joining IMO, Dr Mathieckal has been involved in IMO’s technical cooperation programmes and major technical cooperation projects, as Chief Technical Adviser, specifically focusing on building capacity in developing countries to address emerging marine environmental issues. He then led the IMO’s Department of Partnerships and Projects where he spearheaded IMO's efforts to enhance its partnership and resource mobilization efforts, promote innovation and develop the portfolio of major technical cooperation projects to support IMO's technical cooperation function. Dr Matheickal is an ex-officio member of the WMU Executive Board.
