High School Students Learn about Maritime Career Options

On 25 September, the World Maritime University (WMU) welcomed a delegation of 55 students, aged 16 to 18, and five educators from the Niels Brock International Shipping High School (Det Internationale Gymnasium Niels Brock) in Copenhagen, arranged by Asia House Denmark. The visit was organized to inspire the next generation to consider careers in the maritime sector — not only at sea as seafarers, but also in crucial roles as administrators, policymakers, and leaders in the global maritime community.

The programme included a general presentation about WMU, followed by presentations highlighting WMU’s mission and the diverse career pathways available in maritime. Associate Professor Aleke Stöfen-O’Brien shared her experiences in environmental policy, marine governance, and ocean research, contributing to global initiatives on biodiversity, marine pollution, maritime decarbonization, and the development of international environmental agreements. Students also heard from Associate Professor Alessandro Schönborn, who has extensive research and engineering experience in marine and energy systems, specializing in fuel injection and hydraulics for marine engines, developing fuels with tunable ignition properties, and studying auto-ignition and combustion characteristics of alternative fuels. In addition, five current WMU students shared their own experiences, showcasing the breadth of opportunities in the field.

Asia House has generously supported WMU graduates by sponsoring a prize at graduation for each of the nine MSc specializations — seven in Malmö and two in China. This contribution not only celebrates academic excellence but also reinforces the university’s mission to advance maritime knowledge and build global capacity.

The event highlighted the importance of personal stories in inspiring young people to pursue maritime careers. By connecting directly with students and demonstrating the variety of roles available, WMU and Asia House continue to nurture the next generation of maritime professionals.

WMU is grateful for this collaboration with Asia House, and welcomes further collaboration with regional schools to engage and empower youth, give back to the community, and build capacity.
