Fifth Annual Friends of WMU Germany Seminar Focuses on Ports

The delegation from The Friends of WMU Germany met with WMU President, Professor Max Mejia; Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Professor Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs, and students in the Class of 2024 and 2025 (front row) who are funded by Germany.

The fifth annual Friends of WMU Germany seminar took place on 24 October with the topic of Ports and their Importance for the Transformation to a Green, Climate-neutral Economy in a Rapidly Changing World. The seminar was presented to World Maritime University (WMU) students and faculty in the Sasakawa Auditorium. A delegation from the Friends of WMU Germany was also in attendance.

In his welcome remarks, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President of WMU, thanked the Friends of WMU Germany for actively supporting the University. He highlighted the importance of strong networks for the University and thanked the Friends of WMU Germany for their efforts since the Friends were founded in 2020, noting that Germany has been a long-standing WMU partner. 

The seminar was moderated by Mr Reinhard Klingen, Chair of the Friends of WMU Germany and member of the WMU Board of Governors, and featured four speakers including: 

  • Daniel Hosseus, Managing Director, ZDS (German Seaport Companies)
  • Malek Adams, Deputy Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority
  • Professor Thomas Schlipköther, CEO, RELA AG, and 2001 - 2022 Member of the Executive Board of Duisburger Hafen AG, COO and CTO
  • Iven Krämer, Head of Department Port Economy and Shipping, Hanseatic City of Bremen State Ministry of Industry, Ports and Transformation

Prior to the seminar, the delegation met with students in the Class of 2024 and 2025 who are currently sponsored by Germany, which includes a total of 9 students, five in the 2024 class and four in the 2025 class. 

The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany is a long-term supporter of WMU. As the second largest provider of fellowships, the Federal Government and partners in the German maritime industry have funded the education of nearly 400 WMU graduates from roughly 80 countries. Among the maritime leaders financed by Germany to study at WMU is Mr. Kitack Lim, the former Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization.
