Finnish Delegation Visits WMU

On 14 June, President Doumbia-Henry was delighted to welcome a delegation from the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (TRAFI) led by Mr Tuomas Routa, Director General of the Maritime Sector, with his Chief Advisers, Dr Anita Mäkinen and Mr Ove Hagerlund. TRAFI brings together all stakeholders in the maritime cluster in Finland. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the operationalization of the Memorandum of Understanding with TRAFI signed in Turku on 20 May which covers cooperation in the following areas: marine, maritime and ocean affairs, including maritime policy, safety, energy efficiency, security and marine environmental and ocean management. The issues on which agreement was reached include active support from TRAFI regarding the mobilization of funding for MSc students from Finnish sources  and the closer involvement of experts from Finland in the WMU academic programme particularly in areas such as environmental technology and energy efficiency, ocean governance, ice navigation, digitalization and the development of autonomous ships. Finland will also continue to host field studies for students from WMU. The possibility of developing joint scientific/technological research projects was also discussed. In addition, it was agreed that the WMU would host a seminar on the topic “Transformation to low carbon shipping” in December 2016 as a follow-up of a Declaration by the Nordic Environment Ministers as a response to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

It was also agreed the Finland would participate actively in the International Conference on Maritime Energy Management – MARENER - in January
