Executive Director of the European Fisheries Control Agency Delivers Special Lecture

On 10 October, the World Maritime University (WMU) weclomed Dr. Susan Steele, Executive Director of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), for a special lecture on “The EFCA and its Role within the EU and in Other Regions of the World.”

Dr. Steele opened her lecture by highlighting the remarkable diversity within the audience, noting how the many nationalities represented reflected WMU’s truly global community. Her address provided valuable insights into EFCA’s mission, emphasizing its pivotal role in promoting sustainable fisheries management, ensuring compliance with EU regulations, and strengthening international cooperation.

The lecture offered students and faculty a unique opportunity to hear directly from one of Europe’s leading experts in fisheries governance and maritime policy. Following the presentation, participants engaged in a dynamic discussion with Dr. Steele, exploring the challenges and opportunities of achieving sustainable fisheries management in a global context.

Born in Ireland, Dr. Steele has devoted her career to the ocean and its sustainable management. She has served as Executive Director of the European Fisheries Control Agency since 1 September 2021. She has extensive experience in fisheries management and control, having previously served as Executive Chair and CEO of the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority of Ireland (2013–2021). Her earlier leadership roles include Head of Innovation at the Seafood Development Centre (2009–2013) and Head of Aquaculture and Business Training at Ireland’s Seafood Development Board (2006–2009). She holds an undergraduate degree and PhD in Marine Biology, an MBA, and a Master’s in Adult Education. She is also an International Chartered Director and holds an Executive Certificate in Public Leadership from Harvard University.
