2014 Dragon Boat Race

After nearly a decade of absence, the Dragon Boat Races returned to Malmö in 2014 during Malmöfestivalen. The races were a highlight of student and staff activities until they ceased in 2005. With their return, WMU was eager to participate. In previous years WMU teams competed with several other groups, but this year’s race featured WMU teams only with staff vs. students.

Each team was made up of 12 rowers and one drummer. There was one opportunity for a dry paddle practice before the race took place on Saturday, 16 August. Spectators lined the canal in downtown Malmö to watch the races and many WMU students and staff turned out to cheer their teams. The 200m race was a close call with the students in the lead until the last strokes when the staff team pulled ahead of the students to take the gold.
