Dr. Pierre Cariou has been a Senior Professor in Shipping and Port Economics at Kedge Business School since 2010. He was Professor at the World Maritime University from 2004 to 2010, in charge of the Shipping and Port Management specializations. He started his academic carrier in 2001-2004 as an Associate Professor in economics at the University of Nantes (France).
Pierre completed his PhD in 2000 on strategic alliances in liner shipping at the University of Nantes and at Erasmus University of Rotterdam. He received prizes for the best paper during the 2018 International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) Conference in Mombasa, for the best Runner Up paper prize during the 2006 IAME conference in Melbourne, and for the best PhD thesis, the Maritime Economics and Logistics/Palgrave-MacMillan PhD price, during the 2001 IAME conference in Panama City. Pierre also contributes to consultancy projects and reports for private companies (SKS Tanker, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, SOCATRA, Casino Group, CMA CGM, NATEXIS bank…), and public organizations (French Parliament and Government, Port Authorities of Nantes or Marseille-Fos, International Maritime Oragnization, OECD…).
His main research interests are on shipping/port economics, maritime safety and marine environmental protection, topics on which he published more than 80 academic papers. He is a member of the International Maritime & Trade lab within the KEDGE Supply Chain Center of Excellence (CESIT), Visiting Research Scholar at Cornell University (2021-2020), a member of the KLU Centre in Global Shipping & Logistics, and a founding member of PortEconomics.eu. He is a former Vice-President of IAME and a Board member of the French Merchant Marine Academy (ENSM).
