



Claudia Barahona-Fuentes is Associate Professor of Maritime Education and Training (MET) at the Barcelona School of Nautical Studies, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). She has more than 25 years of teaching experience teaching students and teachers as she also participates as a teacher trainer in English Medium Instruction teacher training courses for engineering content lecturers at the university. She is actively engaged in different school management committees and is at present the gender equality officer. She also developed different internationalization tasks as Vice-Dean of International Relations and IAMU representative for 10 years.
Her research interests encompass the incorporation of the gender perspective in Maritime Education and Training (MET) and the role of women in the maritime sector. She holds a PhD in Gender Mainstreaming in MET from the UPC (2023). She is also a member of the UPC research group SOCSTEM, which aims to promote the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines from their social side. Hence, she has participated in different gender mainstreaming projects at the university and has coordinated a teaching innovation project to develop a Gender Equality Platform with resources to mainstream gender in MET. She has also co-authored a Guide to Mainstreaming Gender in University Teaching for Nautical, Marine and Naval Engineering, published by Xarxa Vives d’Universitats (2022). Recently, she received the UPC University Teaching Quality Award 2024 for coordinating participatory action research to mainstream gender in MET at FNB. In addition, she is interested in the use of technology in teaching and learning, which led her to participate in two different projects on the use of virtual reality (VR) for educational purposes: the EC project “Immersive Business and Engineering English in Virtual Reality: A tool for the sustainable mobility of the skilled workforce in the EU” (European Erasmus+KA project on Virtual Reality 2018-1-TR01-KA203-058252) and “Virtual Reality applications for the development of professional communication skills” (VR-Apro-Comm) (UPC, 2023).
