World Maritime Day 2024 - Navigating the future: safety first!

For World Maritime Day 2024 on 26 September, the World Maritime University (WMU) is joining the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in illuminating their headquarters buildings blue.

The 2024 World Maritime Day theme, "Navigating the future: safety first!" reflects IMO's work to enhance maritime safety and security, in tandem with the protection of the marine environment, whilst ensuring its regulatory development process safely anticipates the fast pace of technological change and innovation.

For the occasion, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., WMU President, reiterated the importance of safety in the maritime domain with the following World Maritime Day 2024 message:

“The 2024 World Maritime Day theme, "Navigating the Future: Safety First!", serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of safety in the maritime industry, which plays a critical role in connecting our world. As we navigate an era of rapid technological advances, climate challenges, and evolving global demands, prioritizing safety is more vital than ever.

"Navigating the Future: Safety First!" underscores how a sustainable future for the maritime industry hinges on our ability to safeguard the lives of seafarers, protect the environment, and ensure the smooth operation of global trade. Every innovation—whether in vessel design, port management, or digital navigation—must be anchored in safety standards that not only protect human lives but also promote sustainability and resilience.

Through focusing on safety, we can navigate future challenges with confidence and adaptability. Emerging technologies like automation and artificial intelligence, combined with responsible leadership, can create a maritime sector that thrives on safety, collaboration, and innovation. Together, let us commit to fostering a just transition that safeguards both people and the planet as it supports the industry’s growth, with safety as the compass guiding us toward a better, more sustainable world.”

About World Maritime Day

World Maritime Day was first held in 1978 to mark the 20th anniversary of the IMO Convention’s entry into force. Celebrations are held throughout the world to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment, and to emphasize a particular aspect of IMO's work. World Maritime Day celebrations are usually held during the last week in September. To read more about World Maritime Day 2024, click here.
