WMU’s President visits Republic of Korea

Dr Björn Kjerfve, President of WMU, has visited Republic of Korea, where he received a warm welcome from several Korean organisations, as well as attending the 11th Annual Assembly of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) in Busan.

The Secretary-General of IMO and Chancellor of WMU, Mr Efthimios Mitropoulos, opened the Assembly on 15 October, and was pleased to meet Dr Oh, President of the Korea Maritime University, and some of the cadets from various universities represented at the Assembly.

On 18 October, a formal ceremony marked the continuing relationship between WMU and the Republic of Korea, a significant fellowship donor and long-time supporter of the University.  A Memorandum of Understanding between WMU and the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) was signed.  Dr Kong-Gyun Oh, Chairman and CEO of KR, and his staff welcomed Dr Kjerfve and Professor Daniel Moon, and pledged KR’s continuing support to WMU as it grows and develops in the coming years.

The President and Professor Moon were delighted to meet with friends and alumni of the University on 18 October.  Twelve WMU graduates, including Dr J. K. Lee (former Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs) gathered for dinner in the centre of Seoul, and received an update on the activities of the alumni from Dr Lee, and an update on planning and developments at WMU from Dr Kjerfve.  “The graduates here have made tremendous efforts to promote the University, and the whole WMU community is very grateful for their hard work,” said Dr Kjerfve.
