WMU at SMM and the 10th International Symposium, Information on Ships

WMU recently participated in the 26thTrade Fair - Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology International (SMM) - from 8-12 September, as well as the 10th International Symposium, Information on Ships, from 4-5 September, both in Hamburg, Germany.

The SMM event included 50,000 industry visitors and the topic of innovation was featured prominently on the agenda. The exhibits covered a wide spectrum including the latest technology applications for maritime safety,  and a number of revolutionary innovations under development in ongoing research projects. WMU participated at the fair together with all partners of the ACCSEAS research project. A highlight at the exhibition stand was the demonstration of the sophisticated e-Navigation related application of 'Augmented Reality' that is integrated into goggles with an aim to improve collision avoidance. The application was developed by the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz located in Terschelling, Netherlands, in collaboration with a team that includes WMU Associate Professor, Dr.-Ing. Michael Baldauf, who is developing  an algorithm for enhanced alarming and risk indexing of dangerous targets that can be used to highlight and mark ships in the augmented reality environment.

The demonstration at SMM was an effective supplement to the scientific papers presented by Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz and WMU at the German Institute of Navigation’s 10thInternational Symposium, Information on Ships, which took place the week prior to SMM.

SMM also provided an opportunity to distribute information about the new Executive Maritime Management Postgraduate Diploma program that WMU will deliver in partnership with DNV GL starting in 2015. Leaflets for the new program were distributed by DNV GL at their exhibition stand.
