WMU Alumni Association Launched in Philippines

The WMU Alumni Association of the Philippines was launched on 5 August in Manila at the Marlow Navigation Training Center, Inc. To date, the Philippines ranks third in the countries with the most WMU graduates with a total of 128 alumni.

Current WMU student, Ofa Kataki Fisher from Fiji was in attendance at the event that was jointly held in her honor as the first recipient of the Gregorio Oca Memorial Scholarship. Oca, a figure of great stature within the International Transport Workers’ Federation and in the wider maritime world, is the late founder of the Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP). The Oca scholarship provides funds for a student to visit the Philippines for one week, with travel paid by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust. The recipient is a guest of AMOSUP and visits some of the training institutions and welfare facilities put in place by Capt. Oca, and maintained by AMOSUP. The study visit enhances knowledge of training practices in other countries, provides valuable insight into the workings of the best training institutions in the number one seafarer supply country in the world, and highlights the welfare work that AMOSUP carries out for seafarers.
