WISTA-UK Personality of the Year 2013 Delivers Lecture at WMU

Dr. Anne-Marie Warris, recently named WISTA-UK Personality of the Year 2013, was at WMU on 19 September to deliver a guest lecture. An internationally respected expert in climate change and environmental issues, Dr. Warris has been a guest lecturer at WMU since 2011. Her lecture this past week was entitled Climate Change + Maritime Industry =?

Dr. Warris recently retired from her role as Environmental Adviser reporting to the Marine Director at Lloyd’s Register to establish ecoreflect ltd, a company intended to “develop solutions related to the interlinkages between environment/sustainability and economic reality.”

With more than 25 years of experience in sustainability, she has provided her expertise to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environmental and Protection Committee. In 2010 she was the UK expert to the IMO Expert Group on Market Based Measures, and in 2013 to the IMO Expert Workshop on estimating greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. She was a driving force behind the “sustainable Shipping Initiative” and has been involved as an expert in numerous EC consultations covering shipping and monitoring, reporting and verification.

Dr. Warris plays a key role at the ISO as chair of the ISO sub-committee responsible for environmental management systems, and of ISO’s Joint Task Coordination Group for management systems. She also serves as chair of the Emissions Trading Group (ETG) UK Limited.

WISTA-UK is part of the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA). The accolade of WISTA-UK Personality of the Year 2013 for Dr. Warris was announced last week during London International Shipping Week. She will now serve as WISTA-UK’s nominee for the WISTA International Personality of the Year that will be determined at the WISTA International Conference in Montreal, 2-4 October.
