UN Day 2015 – 70th Anniversary

This year the 24th of October marks the 70th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) since the entry into force of its Charter in 1945. United Nations Day has been celebrated as UN Day on 24 October since 1948.

In his 2015 UN Day Message, UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon stated, "National flags are a mark of pride and patriotism in every country around the world.  But there is only one flag that belongs to all of us…The United Nations works for the entire human family of seven billion people, and cares for the earth, our one and only home."

The campaign for the 70th anniversary is “Strong UN. Better World.” The UN is encouraging that this milestone anniversary be used as an opportunity “to look back on the UN’s history and take stock of its enduring achievements. It is also an opportunity to spotlight where the UN – and the international community as a whole – needs to redouble its efforts to meet current and future challenges across the three pillars of its work: peace and security, development, and human rights.”

At WMU, UN Day was observed on 23 October and WMU President, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, addressed the staff. The President noted the importance of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and the key role the UN has played in bringing nations together to focus on common goals that benefit society as a whole. “This anniversary is of particular significance as it comes shortly after the adoption by the 193 Member States of the United Nations on 25 September of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development containing 17 goals and 169 targets. The adoption represents a historic milestone and fitting tribute to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations,” the President stated. Further, the President noted the important maritime capacity-building role that WMU plays as part of the United Nations family, supporting developing and developed nations to ensure safe and sustainable shipping on clean oceans.

WMU was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. The University is a global center of excellence for maritime and ocean post-graduate education and research and is the only UN institution headquartered in Sweden.
