New Charter for WMU

WMU will begin 2010 with a new Charter.  IMO Assembly, at its 26th session in early December, adopted a resolution to update and revise the University’s Charter, and to provide a more flexible and responsive governance system.  The new Charter will take effect on 1 January 2010.

The Board of Governors will now consist of no more than 30 appointed members, and have specific responsibility for considering methods of financing the University to ensure its continuing effective operation.  The new Charter has also replaced the old Executive Council with a new 11-member Executive Board, which will have a Chairman appointed by the Secretary-General.  The Executive Board will co-ordinate the governance of the University.

The new Charter marks the end of almost three years of continuous review and assessment, which was set in motion to ensure that WMU’s governance and management provisions are able to meet the emerging demands which will be placed on the University by the maritime sector in the next decade.
