Max Mejia teaches at USCG Academy

The World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden and the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, USA concluded a memorandum of understanding in June 2011 establishing a faculty exchange program.

Through the faculty exchange program, the two institutions agree to share expertise and knowledge and identify areas of mutual interest in the maritime field for further collaboration in both teaching and research. Two members of the Coast Guard Academy's faculty have already taught at WMU under the MoU - Capt. Paul Szwed and Mr. Charles Corio delivered a leadership course to 55 World Maritime University students on 5-9 March 2012.

Assoc. Prof. Max Mejia, Head of Maritime Law and Policy Specialisation, was the first World Maritime University faculty member to take part in the exchange. On 12-16 March 2012, Dr. Mejia gave lectures to over 200 Coast Guard Academy cadets on contemporary maritime issues such as maritime security and the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006. He was also invited to present a paper at the Maritime Security Forum held on 14 March in the Coast Guard Academy grounds.

The photo shows Dr. Mejia presenting the WMU flag to Rear Admiral Sandra Stosz, Superintendent of the US Coast Guard Academy. Also in the photo is Cdr. Matt Edwards, who will be coming to WMU to teach in June.
