Maritime Seminar: Regional Perspectives and Challenges

On 8-9 August 2011, the World Maritime University proudly hosted a Maritime Seminar focusing on three distinct regions, West Africa, India Subcontinent and South America/Antarctica. Experts representing these regions provided insightful perspectives regarding issues and challenges facing the maritime safety, security and environmental protection in their respective regions. Each presenter provided a one-hour presentation and the Seminar ended with a panel discussion. During the panel discussion, audience members were able to ask thought-provoking questions of the subject matter experts as well as gain advice on methods for dealing with similar issues in their own regions.

The Seminar Participants included CDR Juan Carlos Cubisino (Argentine Coast Guard) and RADM Ivan Valenzuela (Chilean Coast Guard) representing the South America and Antarctica Region. Mr. Olivio Jacinto (Republic of Angola Representation at IMO) and Mr. Muralee Thummarukudy (UNEP) represented West Africa. Prof. Proshanto Mukherjee (Law & Policy: WMU and Lund University) and Capt. Fazlur Chowdhury (Maritime Consultant) discussed issues related to the India Subcontinent.
