In Memoriam: Claes Isacson

Mr. Claes Isacson, Chief Executive Officer of the Gard group for the last 12 years, and a member of the WMU Executive Board for the past two years, died just after midnight on Saturday, 13 July at the age of 57.

Claes joined Gard in 1996 to set up an office in Göteborg, was promoted after 3 years to head of P&I underwriting, and became CEO in 2001 in Oslo, Norway. His tenure as CEO was characterized by growth and diversification, which led to Gard become the largest P&I club in the world and the third largest marine insurer. Gard has total assets of USD 2.5 billion and employs more than 450 staff in 12 countries. Claes also played a key role in the wider marine insurance market and was elected Chairman of the International Group of P&I Clubs for a three year term in 2009.

WMU President, Dr. Björn Kjerfve, stated "It was truly a pleasure to have Claes serve as an engaged and very knowledgeable member of the Executive Board. He was a great supporter of the University and brought tremendous insight and enthusiasm to our discussions. His absence will be felt acutely. On behalf of WMU, I extend our sincerest condolences to Claes' wife and family."
