IMO Secretary-General Visits MaRiSa Lab at WMU

IMO Secretary General and WMU Chancellor, Mr. Koji Sekimizu, visited the Maritime Risk and Safety (MaRiSa) Simulation Laboratory on the opening day of the ShipArc 2015 conference jointly hosted by IMO, the Arctic Council and WMU from 25-27 August.

The MaRiSa lab was inaugurated in 2012 by Mr. Sekimizu at the former University premises and continues to be used extensively in numerous research projects and activities. This past April, WMU moved to new premises allowing for new features to be incorporated into the lab. The MaRiSa research group showcased for Mr. Sekimizu the evolution of the simulator features such as the Sense-floor and integration of the Ship Handling Simulator with the Safety and Security Training Simulator for complex exercises. The MaRiSa group emphasized the simulator's potential in safety and security related research and Chief Simulation Officer, Associate Professor Michael Baldauf, highlighted the future possibilities of integrating the MaRiSa simulator with international simulator networks.

The MaRiSa lab was made possible through a substantial grant from the TK Foundation and purchase of the equipment through the generosity of simulator manufacturers Rheinmetall Defence Electronics (RDE) GmbH.
