Continued Collaboration with Lloyds Maritime Academy

On 30 March, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry welcomed partners from Lloyd’s Maritime Academy (LMA) including Jeff Hearn, Managing Director, Christopher Atwell, Director of Education and Training, and Paul Napper, Curriculum Developer. The purpose of the visit was to enhance collaboration on the four distance learning programmes jointly delivered by WMU and LMA and to explore new opportunities for further cooperation.

“The distance learning opportunities offered by WMU and LMA enable mature senior professionals, who are not able to join the Malmö-based academic programs due to professional commitments, to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in maritime issues or an LLM if they meet the requisite entry requirements. The distance learning LLM is being offered jointly with our sister institution, the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI). Through these offerings, we support the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Goal 4: ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. We look forward to enhancing our collaboration with LMA as we continue to serve maritime and ocean constituents with flexible educational opportunities,” stated President Doumbia-Henry.

The partnership between WMU and LMA began in 2005 with the launch of the Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Insurance. The collaboration was expanded in 2014 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Energy followed by a Postgraduate Diploma as well as an LLM in International Maritime Law in 2015. To date, nearly 400 students have enrolled in the distance learning programmes jointly offered with LMA.
