Class of 2012 Gives Tree to Malmö City

With cooperative weather and an enthusiastic group of WMU students, the Honorable Mayor Kent Andersson of the City of Malmö was presented with a Turkish hazelnut tree on behalf of the Malmö M.Sc. Class of 2012. The tree was planted on 27 November just a short walk from WMU on Malmöhusvägen, near the Tekniska Museum and just across the street from the Fiskehoddarna. The 2012 Student Council President, Mustafa Kavlakci of Turkey, made a short speech thanking the Mayor and the City of Malmö for their generosity and hospitality in hosting WMU. He stated that after living in Malmö, the students know what constitutes a truly beautiful city. Mayor Andersson accepted the tree on behalf of the City and remarked on the importance of WMU to Malmö and the appropriateness of such a gift for the sustainably focused City.

Each graduating class has presented the City with a gift of thanks and a tree has been the tradition since 2004 when the idea was suggested by students from the Philippines. The City of Malmö determines the type of tree and appropriate location, and the gift is funded by the students.
