Annual Malmö City Welcome Dinner, 2015

The annual City of Malmö welcome dinner for the incoming students was held 14 October in the Old City Hall. Nearly 350 guests were in attendance including current students and their families, host families, and WMU faculty and staff.

Mr. Kent Andersson, Mayor of Malmö, Chairman of the Malmö City Council, and WMU Governor, welcomed the guests to the historic Old City Hall. Chairman Andersson noted the honor of hosting WMU in Malmö and the contribution of the University to the local community which includes residents from over 170 different countries. Further, Chairman Andersson expressed appreciation that WMU, as a United Nations institution in Malmö, fosters cross-cultural understanding that supports the vital global shipping industry.

WMU President, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, addressed the gathering and thanked Chairman Andersson and the City for their ongoing support of the University noting the extraordinary new facilities for WMU as well as the privilege of coming together in the historic Old City Hall as guests of the City. The President noted that Sweden has long been a champion of development globally and expressed appreciation for Malmö as a welcoming home for the University and its students.

In his remarks, the newly elected Student Council President for the Class of 2016, Mr. Anas Saleh Mohammad from Jordan, commented on what a pleasure it is to have the University located in Malmö which is such a beautiful, functional, and welcoming city. Further, Mr. Mohammad remarked that the Class of 2016 is the first class to study entirely in the new facilities that are an extraordinary gift to support the future generations of maritime leaders.

The welcome dinner, graciously hosted by the City of Malmö, is a highlight of activities at the University bringing the local WMU community together to share in an evening that supports harmony and cross cultural understanding in the true spirit of the United Nations.
