WMU International Day 2014

In the true spirit of the United Nations, WMU’s International Day promotes harmony and cross-cultural understanding. The celebration is a highlight of the academic year and is hosted by the students for friends, host families, and WMU staff. This year, the 15th annual celebration of International Day took place on 9 August 2014.

This year’s event brought together over 200 people from roughly 50 countries to share traditions, costumes, cuisine, and camaraderie. The celebration took place in the courtyard of the Henrik Smith Residence and was a great success despite torrential downpours during the main portion of the event.

After welcoming remarks by WMU Acting President, Neil Bellefontaine, the WMU choir sang “We are the World.” A national dress parade of fashions and cultural presentations were prominent features in the program. The tradition of sharing food through culture continued this year with the students providing specialty foods representative of their home countries for the guests.

This year’s event also provided the opportunity to celebrate the establishment of the World Maritime University Women’s Association (WMUWA). The Association’s constitution was signed on behalf of the WMU administration by Neil Bellefontaine, Acting President, and Patrick Donner, Acting Vice President Academic, and on behalf of the WMUWA by Class of 2014 students Deniece Aiken who will serve as the first President of the Association, and Medina Thiam who will serve as Vice President.
