On 20 May, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea to finalize the establishment of a Korean Professorial Chair at WMU and to provide fellowships for designated students from MOF.

The MoU was signed by  both WMU Acting President, Professor Neil Bellefontaine and Mr. Seung-Hwan CHO, Assistant Minister, Maritime Affairs and Safety Policy Bureau in the presence of WMU President Designate, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry. The MoU provides for a non-fixed term Korean Professorial Chair that will be filled by Dr. Dong-wook SONG as of 1 September. Further, the Agreement provides for Fellowships for members of the MOF staff to study in the MSc. program in Malmö.

Acting President Bellefontaine and Professor Daniel S.H. Moon, INMARSAT Chair and Head of Shipping and Port Management, were in Korea this past December to sign the Minutes of Agreement for the establishment of the Korean Professorial Chair in Shipping and Port Management and were pleased to welcome this distinguished delegation to WMU for the inauguration of the new WMU building. There was also an opportunity for the delegation to meet with the current students from the Republic of Korea.

The University has a long-standing and harmonious relationship with MOF which has hosted Field Studies for WMU students since 2004.
