MaRiSa Laboratory Inaugurated

Inauguration of the Maritime Risk and Safety (MaRiSa) Simulation Laboratory on May 7th establishes a unique opportunity at WMU for integrated training in safety and contingency planning. In addition to its significance as a teaching and research tool, the focus of the simulator on the Öresund region is a potential asset to local stakeholders such as Malmö VTS as well as pilots and shipping companies operating in the area.

Dr. Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs headed the group of researchers who established the lab through a substantial grant from the TK Foundation. Purchase of the equipment was made possible through the generosity of simulator manufacturers Rheinmetall Defence Electronics (RDE) GmbH who were keenly interested in supporting WMU with a unique simulation system for maritime emergency training. Additional support was provided by Abeking & Rasmussen Shipyard including a chart table creating a more realistic navigational bridge.

Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization inaugurated the lab with many of the Board of Governors present as well as Claus Bornhorst of Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH.
