Delegation from Republic of Korea attends WMU Graduation

For the WMU graduation ceremony on 2 November, WMU welcomed Ambassador Sungnam LIM and Maritime Attaché, S.H. CHO, from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in London. The esteemed guests were in Malmö for the graduation of four students in the Class of 2014 who are funded through the IMO-Republic of Korea Fund. Since 2005, the Fund has sponsored 46 students from 16 different countries.

WMU has a strong relationship with the Republic of Korea through the IMO-Republic of Korea Fund, Professor Daniel Seong-Hyeok Moon who hails from Korea, and field studies that have been hosted for WMU students since 2004 by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). In addition, the Korean Register of Shipping has donated sets of KR-CON to all WMU students and staff for the past three consecutive years, as well as donating 30,000 EUR to WMU’s new building that will be finished in the spring of 2015. Dr. Kong-Gyun OH, Chairman and CEO (ret.) of the Korean Register of Shipping served on WMU’s Board of Governors for several years, as well as Dr. Keo-Don OH, President (ret.) of the Korea Maritime University. Currently serving on the Board of Governors is Dr. Han-il PARK, President, Korea Maritime and Ocean University.

In December, Professor Neil Bellefontaine, Acting President of WMU, and Professor Moon, INMARSAT Chair and Head of Shipping Management & Logistics and Port Management, will travel to the Republic of Korea and meet with officials at MOF to discuss ways to further strengthen the relationship.

Overall, there are 71 WMU alumni from the Republic of Korea.  Four students are currently in the Class of 2015. Of the new students, Hyun Lee is the Student Council President. She is currently studying in the Shipping Management and Logistics (SML) specialization. Her brother, Han Lee, is studying in the Maritime Safety and Environmental (MSEA) Administration specialization. Both are sponsored by their employer, KOSCO, Ltd. Sun-Bae HONG is studying MSEA and is funded by the IMO-Republic of Korea Fund, and Sung Man JUNG is funded by the Korea Ship Safety Technology Authority and is studying Port Management (PM).
