The World Maritime University (WMU), established within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding their mutual interests in the field of maritime and oceans, the development of expertise, the protection of the marine environment and the building of capacity worldwide.

From 24-26 February, a delegation from WMU visited several agencies in Canada with the aim of strengthening partnerships and collaboration. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) during the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) Extraordinary International Executive Board Meeting in Tokyo on 13 February. The MOU was signed by Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU and VADM Eduardo Ma R Santos, AFP(Ret), President of MAAP. The signing was witnessed by Dr. Takeshi Nakazawa, Executive Director of IAMU.

The World Maritime University (WMU) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) have signed a Cooperation Agreement on matters of capacity building and research with particular emphasis on the design, development and delivery of joint training activities and modules falling under common areas of interest and research. In addition, it provides for Field Study Training exchanges for WMU students and EMSA beneficiaries as well as the exchange of lecturers.

WMU and Port Klang Free Zone of Malaysia sign MoU

The World Maritime University (WMU) and Port Klang Free Zone SDN BHD (PKFZ), Port Klang, Malaysia signed on 26 November, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) relating to cooperation in the field of maritime education, research, training and capacity-building with a view to develop and strengthen academic cooperation and capacity-building.


The MOU covers five areas of cooperation as follows:


     a) distance learning education offered by WMU;


     b) research, in the fields of shipping, port management and the protection of the marine environment;


     c) field study training

The World Maritime University (WMU), founded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has widened its focus to include the marine hull and machinery insurance sector for the first time, thanks to a new cooperation with American Hellenic Hull Insurance Company (AHHIC).

On 19 June, WMU President, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, delivered a keynote address at the East Med Maritime Conference, which took place in Beirut, Lebanon, from 19-20 June 2019.


The Conference was held under the patronage of Lebanese Prime Minister Mr Saad Hariri. Inaugurated by the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr Youssef Fenianos, the conference highlighted the latest developments in the shipping, maritime, and offshore industries that are present and emerging, in the Eastern Mediterranean region. On 14 June, WMU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Higher Institute of Maritime Studies (ISEM) headquartered in Casablanca, Morocco. The MOU was signed by Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU and Dr. Mohamed Briouig, Director of ISEM.


ISEM is one of seven institutions with whom a review and evaluation process was successfully concluded and approved by the WMU Board of Governors at its 37th Session in May 2019.
