2013 MSEA Field Study to Rostock and Copenhagen

A four-day, March field study took 43 MSEA students to the old Hanseatic town of Rostock, a maritime center of Germany's Baltic coast, and concluded with a day in Copenhagen. The group visited several different agencies and organizations in Rostock including the Federal Agency of Shipping and Hydrography (Bundesamt für Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie), the Marinesoft Ltd. company - a service provider and manufacturer active in the field of maritime education and training and a longstanding supporter of WMU's field study programs, the fire fighting laboratory of the Institute for Safety Techniques and Ship's Safety, the Federal Agency for Technical Support (Technisches Hilfswerk) , and the Fraunhofer Institute for graphic data processing.

The program included a live demonstration of the development of paper and electronic sea charts, and a visit to the survey and wreck-search and research vessel DENEB. Students attended practical fire-fighting exercises as well as learning about the organization and on-scene work required to combat oil pollution off the Baltic coast. Finally, the students were invited to experience virtual and augmented reality with the world’s very first and only Wing-and-Ground-Ship simulator. They also stepped into the world of 3D virtual reality of modern cruise ship to support its design and specification of safety equipment.

The field trip concluded with a one-day program provided and hosted by the Danish Maritime Administration in Copenhagen. DMA introduced their approach for the implementation of IMO's conventions, rules, and regulations as well as the application of the e-Navigation concept in shipping and administration.
