Container Terminal Performance and Planning with a Simulation Technique

Short Description/Aims

The aim of this course is to provide the participants the basic concept of port logistics and its meaning of total transport chain with a particular emphasis on a container terminal and to discuss the importance of a proper container terminal capacity (PCTC) for both a port and its customer. In order to fulfil this, with the development of a relevant simulation program, an analysis of the proper handling capacity for container terminal will be made. Further economic impacts arisen from the improper container terminal capacity will be examined from the total cost incurrent in the port.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lecture, the student will be able to:

  • explain the concept of port logistics and its meaning in terms of total transport chain
  • discuss the importance of PCTC for both a port and its customer
  • identify factors affecting PCTC and analyse port transport system in terms of total transport chain
  • demonstrate the implication of an improper container terminal capacity from the viewpoint of futuristic planning and development use the simulation program for calculating PCTC

Additional Information

Computer lab is necessary.(During the whole lecture, students must sit in front of each computer with internet connectivity where software programs are installed such as ARENA program for simulation, EXCEL and etc.). Further a master computer with projection capability and internet connectivity, podium, desk space for instructor materials is also absolutely needed.

Daniel Seong-Hyeok Moon

Dr. Moon is currently the INMARSAT CHAIR Professor of World Maritime University. Dr. Moon earned his Ph.D. degree in Port Economics from Cardiff University, UK. His area of teaching and research has been closely related to ports in terms of management, operation and logistics. He also has a specialty in Maritime Education & Training (MET) based upon his experiences in educating students at Korea Maritime University (KMU) where he has worked for more than 25 years.
