WMU Meets with Transport Canada

On 22 September, Acting President, Neil Bellefontaine and Professor, Larry Hildebrand, met with officials at Transport Canada. The focus of the meeting was to discuss current projects as well as future opportunities with Transport Canada Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Donald Roussel and Laureen Kinney, Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety & Security.

The visit included a presentation by WMU Research Assistant, Tafsir Johansson, to Transport Canada staff regarding the Worldwide Review of Maritime Spill Incidents Intervention Policies and Approaches (MSIIPA) research project that examines critical time frames, desired interventions, and plans and protocols to provide Transport Canada with options to consider in establishing strategies to serve effectively in a multi-jurisdictional legal, regulatory, and policy environment.

Transport Canada has been a strong a supporter of WMU with the establishment of the Canadian Professorial Chair in Marine Environment Protection that is currently held by Professor Hildebrand, in addition to supporting field studies to Canada for WMU students. Earlier this year, Mr. Roussel was at WMU and made a presentation to the students on the topic of Current and Future Issues in Marine Transportation.
