MLP Field Study to London

From 1-5 October the 2012 MLP students participated in a Field Study to London under the direction of WMU Assistant Professor Maria Carolina Romero. Their visit began at the International Chamber of Shipping where a presentation was made by Simon Benneth, Director of External Relations, and Emily Rowley, Adviser to ICS. Their activities continued with observation of the 64th meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee and the opportunity to meet with officers from the IMO Technical Cooperation Division providing a first-hand look at the activities of the IMO. The group also visited the International Group of P&I Clubs that included presentations by Legal advisors David Baker and Pauline Marchand, and the International Transport Workers Federation where Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of the Seafarers’ Rights International made a presentation to the group. Additional activities included an introduction to the Greenwich Maritime Institute, a walking tour in the Old Royal Naval College, and a guided tour of the National Maritime Museum.

WMU participated in the Maritime Day event held on 16 May in Mariehamn, Åland. WMU was represented by Associate Academic Dean Patrick Donner and Senior Faculty Specialist, Mia Hedin.
