At the 2017 WMU Graduation Ceremony on 5 November, a record number of six candidates were awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime Affairs. There are now 17 PhD graduates from 15 countries.

The annual Sasakawa Fellows Reception, hosted by The Nippon Foundation, was held at WMU on 4 November in the Sasakawa Auditorium. At the event, 27 students in the Class of 2017, who were sponsored by The Nippon Foundation, were honored as WMU Sasakawa Fellows.

President Doumbia-Henry delivered the Keynote opening address of the Maritime Conference Bahamas 2017 that took place in Nassau from 18 to 20 October in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Education. The theme of the Conference was Connecting Education, Ports and People.
