H.E. Aureny Aguirre O. Sunza is a Mexican career diplomat with the rank of Ambassador and 30 years of experience in the bilateral and multilateral fields.
Ambassador Aguirre serves as Chargée d´Affaires of Mexico in the United Kingdom since November 2019, and Deputy Permanent Representative of Mexico to the International Organizations in the UK since 2015, namely: the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Funds for compensation of damages due to oil pollution (FIDAC); the International Mobile Satellite Telecommunications Organization (IMSO); the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the International Sugar Organization (OIA), and the International Whaling Commission (IWC).
She majored in international relations at the Iberoamerican University in Mexico City (1988) and has a Master degree in National Security obtained at the Naval Higher Studies Center (CESNAV) in Mexico (1992). She has several diplomas from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, including: Diplomatic Law, Privileges and Immunities (2008), Cross Cultural Negotiations (2009), Multilateral Conferences and Diplomacy (2017) and Climate Change Diplomacy (2018).
During her diplomatic career, Mrs. Aguirre has served at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs in diverse Directorate General: Regional American Organisations (1988-1990); Asia-Pacific -Head for China, Japan and India (1990-1993); Specialized International Organisations (2001-2002) and; Protocol -Deputy Director General for Privileges and Immunities (2007-2011).
She has also been posted at the Mexican Diplomatic Missions in Ottawa, Canada (1994-1997); Tel Aviv, Israel (1997-1998); Brussels, Belgium (2002-2006); and Hong Kong, China (2011-2015). She has been member of Mexican delegations in several international meetings such as the Fourth Latin America, the Caribbean, European Union Summit (Vienna, 2006); Fifth Summit of the Americas (Port Spain, Trinidad &Tobago 2009); Sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16, Cancun, 2010); Latin American and Caribbean Unity Summit (Mexico, 2010), among others.
Since 2015, Ambassador Aguirre has led the Mexican delegations attending IMO, IOPC and IMSO sessions. In particular, she has been a key contributor in the process of strengthening the Mexican Maritime Authority and in promoting the effective implementation of IMO conventions in her country, as well as enhancing maritime cooperation with IMO Member States. She served as Vice Chair of Committee 2 of the 31st IMO Assembly (Dec 2019) and currently, is Second Vice Chair of the 1992 Fund Assembly and member of the Board of Appeals of the IOPC Funds. She has outstanding leadership in promoting a gender equality agenda, in line with her country's feminist foreign policy, being a promoter and founder of the IMO Gender Equality Network.
