United Nations Day 2023

United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the 1945 entry into force of the United Nations (UN) Charter. UN Day has been celebrated annually since 1948, and is an opportunity to reaffirm the purposes and principles of the UN Charter as an international treaty which codifies the basic tenets of international relations from the sovereign equality of states to prohibition of the use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.

On the occasion of UN Day 2023, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President of the World Maritime University (WMU), provided the following message:

“At a time when there is great disruption in the world, United Nations Day gives us pause to remember the importance of global cooperation. The World Maritime University is proud to be a member of the United Nations family, and to play a significant role in supporting global cooperation within the maritime and oceans sectors.

In everything that we do, we are committed to upholding the principles of the United Nations, continuously working to build maritime and oceans capacity and cooperation through education, professional training and research in support of sustainable development.

In the true spirit of the United Nations, our students from over 50 countries annually are immersed in maritime and oceans education as well as cross-cultural understanding as they learn and live alongside each other in our Malmö MSc programme, fostering international cooperation while building an international network. The power of this diverse learning environment is transformative for our students both personally and professionally, ultimately benefiting the industry overall. With more than 80 per cent of world trade carried by ships, the importance of shipping to the global supply chain, and ultimately the daily lives of people worldwide, is undeniable.

On United Nations Day, let us focus on what can be accomplished when we work together, respecting our differences, and supporting one another in the common goal of a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future for all.”

Established within the framework of the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, WMU’s mission is to be the world centre of excellence in postgraduate maritime and oceans education, professional training and research, while building global capacity and promoting sustainable development.
