The main energy-consuming phases in the life cycle of ships can be divided into ship production, operation and scrapping. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ship operation are regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). However, the air emissions from ship production and scrapping are not taken into account by the IMO regulations. The Paris Agreement places the responsibility for reducing GHG emissions not only on nations but also on individuals and industries, and the shipbuilding industry is no exception, requiring states to take shipyards GHG emissions into account in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Shipbuilding is an energy-intensive industry and has negative environmental impacts. Given the contribution of the production phase to the life cycle air emissions of ships, there is no international regulation to monitor, control or reduce air emissions during this phase; however, it may be covered under the Paris Agreement NDCs. Achieving a zero emission shipping industry requires a broader, holistic, systematic and "cradle to grave" approach that takes into account the life cycle of the ship, from production to scrapping.
This webinar will provide participants with insights on clean and green shipyards and the process of designing and developing a trans-disciplinary framework for energy management in shipyards and provide the results of case studies. The discussion and insights will be helpful to all individuals and entities wishing to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to improve energy efficiency in shipping, shipbuilding and other industries.
